EP10 - Numerical THMC-Modelling

Goals

Georeservoires are used more and more for technical use, like geothermal energy, storage of radioactive waste and long term CCS. How do georeservoires behave in the long run? The answers to this question will tell us if and how we can use georeservoires technically and economically as well as how they effect land surface, geosphere and man. Most important will be the coupling of heat transport (T), and hydraulic (H)/geomechanical (M) behavior as well as chemical processes (C).

How does the large scale deep- and near surface-fluid dynamics look like? This is the central question of this sub-project. Furthermore, is there any coupling of thermical deep fluid convection and near surface aquifers? These could explain why salty aquifers occur in the Thuringian basin.

EP10 wants to develop the right modelling tools to answer these questions. We believe that the latest generation of THMC models is able to simulate thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical coupled processes.
